Netflix and CBS All Access’s Star Trek: Discovery may have only been available for a few weeks but it’s already been a huge hit with fans of the long-running franchise. Figures don’t lie and Netflix know when they are on to a good thing, so have announced that the series has been renewed for a second season.

Currently, the first six episodes are available with a new episode released each Monday. Star Trek: Discovery will air in two chapters. The final episode of chapter one will debut on Monday, Nov. 13, and the second chapter, featuring the remaining six episodes, will return in January 2018.

In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise,” said Marc DeBevoise, president of CBS Interactive. “This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek legacy.”

The USS Discovery cast of Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Jason Isaacs, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Mary Chieffo, James Frain and more have delighted fans so far, so an early renewal is no surprise, especially if they need to start filming for the follow-up season as soon as January 2018.

Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship and new characters while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.
