The Crimson Bolt

If you think Guardians of the Galaxy is James Gunn’s first attempt at the superhero genre, then I am afraid you’re sadly mistaken. Sort of.

In 2010 indie flick Super was released, starring Rainn Wilson as The Crimson Bolt and his trusty sidekick Boltie (Ellen Page).

Forget about the ingenious inventions of a certain Lucius Fox, The Crimson Bolt delivers hard justice and does so with the help of a wrench.

Whilst bludgeoning a man for simply cutting in line at the movies is not quite the type of ‘crime’ typically addressed in other ‘superhero’ films. It is a refreshingly noble take on the superhero figure and what it is to fight for justice.

Hilarious and dark, it also satirises issues superheroes may face such as waiting an excruciatingly extended period of time for a crime to take place in order to then swoop in to save the day. Ultimately, The Crimson Bolt is not a great ‘superhero’ by any means and, in fact, is more villainous if anything.
