2. SID & NANCY
SID & NANCY is a seminal film as musical bio-pics go. Punk rock represented a particular time in history, when social unrest had hit a fever pitch. Sid Vicious was representative of that mood, and as such, Gary Oldman essentially lost himself in the atmosphere. There’s nary a moment of solemnity, with the brash and explicit nature of the man himself overtaking whatever hints of decency remained.
Maybe sociopathic is a stronger and more subjective description, but played out in a grand and outsized way. People loved Sid Vicious on stage, and despite the dark and sometimes horrific chapters in his relatively short life, he remains a musical icon.
It’s a perfectly framed portrait of the rocker from Gary Oldman that is widely praised as a star-making performance. I see no reason to argue against that at all.
