And now, 45 years after he first stepped onto the bridge of the Starship Enterprise, the original Captain James T. Kirk himself has boldly stepped up to the plate to put forth his thoughts on the matter.

The mighty William Shatner has never been one to shy away from sharing his opinions on any given subject and when it comes to explaining why the franchise that brought him worldwide fame is superior to Star Wars he’s obviously particularly passionate, albeit with tongue ever so slightly in cheek.

Shatner argues that Star Trek concentrates more on relationships, humanity and philosophical questions before dismissing Star Wars as being derivative of Gene Roddenberry’s creation and focused solely on special effects – a showcase for “ILM at its best.” He then goes on to add that since JJ Abrams’ Star Trek movie had even better effects than Star Wars, Lucas’ franchise has now been outclassed in every respect.

And rounding off the debate? Decades after he first pulled a green Orion slave girl into his arms and planted a rough smacker on her lips, Starfleet’s legendary lothario ends his argument by noting that Star Trek had prettier girls than that galaxy far, far away.

Whether you agree with him or not, Shatner’s never anything less than enjoyable to watch and the clip below is well worth three and a half minutes of your time as the former captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise extols the virtues of his franchise of choice.
