Only in its early stages, the newest addition to the Warner Bros DC universe, the spin-off will focus its narrative on an origin story for the troubled villain. Heath Ledger won a posthumous Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the character in Christopher Nolan’s 2008 The Dark Knight.

As the studio look for a younger actor to take on the lead role, The Hangover’s Todd Phillips will take the helm as well as acting as co-writer for the screenplay alongside 8 Mile scribe, Scott Silver. Martin Scorsese will act as a producer alongside Phillips.

With Phillips and Silver said to be already writing the script, rumours of the plot setting have emerged as being a far cry from what we have already seen from the turbulent universe.  The writers are said to be looking at creating a hard-hitting crime story based in early 80’s Gotham City very much set in the same vein as Scorsese’s early classics such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.

The Joker

Leto, who recently took up the role as The Joker for the critically panned Suicide Squad, will be seen in the role in both the sequel and the planned Harley Quinn spin-off.

No word has arisen on any scheduling for filming or where it may appear on the DC calendar of releases as of yet but it planned to appear under the new Warner Bros banner being set up specifically for their expanding universe of original DC storylines.
