Machete started out life as a fake trailer attached to Grindhouse, the two-film feature from Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, back in 2007. Fast forward three years, and he has his own feature film, with Trejo front and centre.
Fast forward another three years, and we come to Machete Kills. The few things that we’ve seen so far promise more brilliant action – you need only see Sofía Vergara’s character poster to get an idea of what to expect – and now the film’s first trailer has debuted online.
In MACHETE KILLS, Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent MACHETE, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet.
Trejo is joined by a truly awesome ensemble, led by Amber Heard, Alexa Vega, Lady Gaga, Sofía Vergara, Charlie Sheen / Carlos Estevez, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., William Sadler, Marko Zaror, and Mel Gibson.
Rodriguez is directing from a script by Kyle Ward, based on an original story the director wrote with his brother, Marcel Rodriguez.
Production is already underway on Rodriguez’s next film, the highly anticipated Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which is due to be released less than a month after Machete Kills. And you can’t help but love how quickly he works. The two are both very much films to look forward to this year.
Machete Kills is set to be released in the US on 13th September, which is a release date you should start committing to memory. This should be a lot of fun. Here’s the first trailer to prove it.
