Marvel were successful before Joss Whedon directed The Avengers, but it was arguably that release – which earned over $1.5 billion worldwide – which turned them into the movie making juggernaut they are today.

With Avengers: Age of Ultron now complete, what does the future hold in store for Whedon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Unfortunately, not the highly anticipated two-part Avengers: Infinity War movies!

Talking in the latest issue of Empire, he says: “I couldn’t imagine doing this again. It’s enormously hard, and it be, by then, a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own. So it’s very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War movie that would eat up the next four years of my life.”

“I obviously still want to be a part of the Marvel Universe – I love these guys – but it ain’t easy,” Whedon adds. “This year has been more like running three shows than any year of my life. It is bonkers.”

We heard last year that Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn was being considered as the director of Avengers: Infinity War, with another more concrete report later stating that Marvel want Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) to handle directing duties on the culmination of their movies.

It will be a shame to lose Whedon of course, but hopefully he stays on to write the scripts if nothing else!
