JJ-AbramsStar Wars Episode VII has been one of the most talked-about films in recent months, with the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney bringing word that a new trilogy would be born.

We first heard the rumour that Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) would be taking the helm back in November, and when we interviewed Jason Flemyng, who’s worked with Vaughn for years, at the Seven Psychopaths premiere, he seemingly let slip that Vaughn would be taking the helm.

But now it looks like all rumours and speculation can be set aside, with the announcement that JJ Abrams will be taking the helm for the first instalment in the coming trilogy according to this report from The Wrap.

Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) has been set to pen the script, which should make for an awesome combination.

It is a surprising move for Abrams, if not for Disney who are clearly hoping Abrams will do for Star Wars what he did for Star Trek. Paramount Pictures may be a little miffed considering that the Star Trek sequel might now be overshadowed by the 2015 film.  As far as we know Abrams has no firm commitments beyond Into Darkness and it has been to be remembered that the Abrams rumours have, so far, been denied.

Nothing has been confirmed thus far and we’re checking with our sources, as soon as this is given the official stamp we’ll update the story.

The Mouse House are also reportedly interested in going down a Marvel route in the future, hiring Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan to pen what could potentially become spin-off projects rather than sequels, which would focus on individual characters in the franchise. And that in turn would mean that we might have much more than the next three Episodes coming our way soon.

Star Wars Episode VII is set to hit theatres in 2015, with an eye to have a new Star Wars film in theatres every two years. With the director’s chair now filled, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
