Home Alone…. undoubtedly one of the greatest Christmas movies ever made but also potentially one of the most brutal. If you’re not familiar with the story, Home Alone kicks off with a large family (The McCallister’s) prepping to jet off to Paris for a vacation. Following a family feud Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), is forced onto the dreaded third floor to sleep alone to think about his actions. That night a storm knocks out the power which means a mad rush to the airport ultimately causing the family mistakenly end up leaving poor Kevin at home….. alone. (The same thing happens again in Home Alone 2 – how his parents kept him and his siblings is a mystery!).
Unbeknown
Now when I say any means necessary, I mean any means necessary! Kevin uses and iron to smash poor Marv (Daniel Stern) in the face, a blow-torch to set Harry’s (Joe Pesci) head on fire, a nail in on the stairs for Marv to step on and an iron tong attached to a door handle for Harry to name but a few. All of this is brutal stuff. With the PG certificate both here in the UK and in the US, Director Chris Columbus and writer John Hughes had to be careful with what they could show to keep to the rating and also to keep the film light, funny and ultimately a Christmas classic.
