Jeff Nichols, writer-director of last year’s Take Shelter, returns with his third film this year, re-teaming with Michael Shannon once more for Mud.

Debuting this month at Cannes, playing in competition, the first clip from the film has gone online over at the festival’s website, giving us our first footage from the film and what we can expect from it.

“Mud is an adventure about two boys, Ellis and his friend Neckbone, who find a man named Mud hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud describes fantastic scenarios – he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper, who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow.”

Matthew McConaughey stars in the lead as the eponymous Mud, with a great supporting cast including Reese Witherspoon, Shannon, Sarah Paulson, and Sam Shepard.

As yet, no word on when we can expect to see the film released, but McConaughey has been proving in recent years to be really diversifying his career and coming back in ways we haven’t seen him before, and Mud is expected to be another big part of his new direction. Here are the first two clips to whet your appetites.
