Les Misérables UK PosterTom Hooper’s Les Misérables has long been one of the most anticipated films of the year, and when the first trailer landed back in May, we got an incredible look at the musical feature coming our way this winter.

Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and Amanda Seyfried lead an outstanding cast, and after seeing a terrific extended featurette and a beautiful new poster in the past week, the first TV spot has now debuted online.

“Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.”

Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks, and Helena Bonham Carter complete the terrific cast, with Hooper directing from a script by William Nicholson (Gladiator, Shadowlands), who adapts the original classic novel of the same name by Victor Hugo and the world-famous stage musical.

Largely identical to that brilliant first trailer, this first TV spot features four main snippets of new footage that I can see – the first of young Cosette (Isabelle Allen) at 0:20, the second of Crowe at 0:37, the third between Seyfried, Redmayne, and Barks at 1:03, and the last of the young Cosette once more at the end.

Les Misérables will be released in the US on Christmas Day, and is very much entering the coming awards season as an incredibly strong contender. It will then head across the Atlantic for an 11th January release here in the UK, a date which really can’t come fast enough. This is going to be simply amazing. Here’s the first TV spot to prove it. Enjoy. Doesn’t it just look beautiful?
