It’s been a long time coming, but the first trailer for Silence is finally here. There’s already been talk of this being a serious Oscar contender next year, and given the talent involved, that wouldn’t be remotely surprising. Still, it’s looking like a very crowded race for Best Picture, so who knows whether or not it will manage to walk away with gold in February!

Still considering the fact that every single Martin Scorsese movie with the exception of Shutter Island has received serious awards consideration, chances are it will get a nod!

Martin Scorsese’s Silence tells the story of two Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) – at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden. The celebrated director’s 28-year journey to bring Shusaku Endo’s 1966 acclaimed novel to life will be in cinemas this December ahead of a wide release in January.

The cast of Silence also includes Tadanobu Asano and Ciaran Hinds, and the screenplay was penned by Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York). Along with the trailer, you can also scroll through the gallery below to check out the poster and some new stills from the amazing looking film.

Silence gets a UK release date of 1st January 2017.
