Some year old comments from Joss Whedon recently started doing the rounds in which he lashed out at the lack of female superhero movies, citing “genuine, recalcitrant, intractable sexism, and old-fashioned quiet misogyny” as the reason. This was of course BEFORE Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman were announced!

The Avengers and Avengers: Ago of Ultron director was still spot on to be fair, but has since decided to clarify those comments, saying: “I just thought, I sounded very harsh. And then [Marvel announced], ‘We’re going to make Captain Marvel. We’re going to make Black Panther. We’re going to shake it up.’ I was just like, great! Now I just sound mean and bitter. But, you know, there’s a lot to be mean and bitter about.”

In the almost countless number of superhero movies on the way between now and 2020, only two have female characters in the lead role. As he’s not too keen on devoting years to Avengers: Infinity War, could Whedon instead tackle another Marvel movie in the form of the highly anticipated Captain Marvel?

“Um, I would never rule anything out, because I like working here. By the same token, the biggest thing for me is that I need to do something that I create myself. It’s been way too long since I created a universe.”

“Captain Marvel I don’t know as well. There have been a few [versions] of her. I have the first issue of Ms. Marvel, back when she was that, and had the Farrah hair. My only issue with her is that she always felt sort of on top. She was very driven. A winner. I always like to dig into the soil of things to find my heroes.”

It’s hard to think of anyone more perfect for Captain Marvel than Whedon, but we’ll have to wait and see!

In other news, the first official TV spot for Avengers: Age of Ultron has been released. It contains no new footage, but is a good sign that the marketing blitz is about to begin. Stay tuned to HeyUGuys for more…
