I just watched one of the most bizarre movies I think I’ve ever seen in the form of Serious Moonlight. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t say it was bad, just bizarre! It’s directed by Cheryl Hines and stars Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell and Justin Long.

The movie opens with Meg Ryan’s character, Louise, a high-powered lawyer coming home to discover that her husband of 13 years (Timothy Hutton) plans to leave her and move to Paris with his new girlfriend Sara (Kristin Bell). She quickly decides that the only way to stop him from leaving is to smash him over the head with a plant pot and tie him up with gaffer tape!

I opened with the word ‘bizarre’ as this movie takes what could be an emotional trauma and makes fun of it. That said, writer Adrienne Shelley realises that this whole ordeal would be awful to cope with and we see Louise (Ryan) begin to the lose the plot and break down through sheer sadness very early on, but only for an instance as this movie is both quirky and funny throughout.

The promotional material for this movie states that it is ‘a charming, kooky, romantic comedy – with a twist!’ and I couldn’t put that better myself. If you want a night in front of the TV with a few laughs some very silly moments, then this one is for you. I’ve embedded a new clip from the movie which will give you a much better idea of what I mean.

Serious Moonlight is released on DVD this coming Monday and you can purchase it here.
