To celebrate the release of What Happens Later, the new rom-com opening in UK cinemas this week, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the film’s star and director to find out more.
Snowed-in at a regional airport overnight, ex-lovers Willa (Meg Ryan) and Bill (David Duchovny) realize they’re still attracted to each other — but also still equally annoyed with each other. As they unpack the riddle of their mutual past and compare their lives to the dreams they once shared, they begin to wonder if their reunion is a mere coincidence or something more enchanted.
Chatting to Ryan, who is making her sophomore directorial effort, and Duchovny, we talk rom-coms, the lure of the film and the unique challenges of performing a “two-hander”, the advantages and disadvantages of working for a director who is also an actor, as well as a chat about two of their older works, both of whom have become cult hits in the years since their release, InnerSpace, and Zoolander.
