Of the many films that debuted at SXSW this year, Drinking Buddies is the one I think I wish I could have seen most.
The leading cast is absolutely stellar, and the early reviews from the festival proved its status as a must-see movie of the year. The film was quickly acquired by Magnolia, and is set to be released in theatres and on VOD this summer.
And with its respective US release dates fast approaching, EW have debuted the first poster for the romantic comedy/drama.
Luke (Johnson) and Kate (Wilde) are co-workers at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking and flirting. They’re perfect for each other, except that they’re both in relationships. Luke is in the midst of marriage talks with his girlfriend, Jill (Kendrick), of six years; Kate is playing it cool with her music producer boyfriend Chris (Livingston). But you know what makes the line between “friends” and “more than friends” really blurry? Beer.
Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, and Ron Livingston star as the leading quartet.
And the film sees Joe Swanberg directing from his own script, assembling perhaps his greatest and most prominent cast to date.
Swanberg has established himself in recent years as one of the forefront directors of the mumblecore movement, and I can’t wait to see this latest feature from him.
Drinking Buddies is set to be released in the US on VOD on July 25th, ahead of a theatrical release on August 23rd. No word as of yet on a UK release date, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a release a little later on in the year. This is definitely one of my must-see movies of the year, and I can’t wait for it to land.
