Paul McGuigan’s Frankenstein marks the latest adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, bringing the monster and his eponymous creator to the big screen once more.

What makes this adaptation all the more interesting is its leading cast, with James McAvoy playing Victor Von Frankenstein, Daniel Radcliffe starring as his assistant Igor, and Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay taking the female lead as Lorelei, a beautiful circus performer who forms a close bond with Igor.

Interestingly, Fox recently pushed the release date out of the expected Halloween 2014 window into early 2015. But the January slot is becoming more and more a place for horror films to make a name for themselves, and with the studio simultaneously dating David Fincher’s Gone Girl for October next year, it’s understandable that they’d want to push Frankenstein a little further down the line. Production is now getting underway, and with it comes the first look at Radcliffe from the set over at The Sun.

The official synopsis remains under wraps for the time being, but the film is described as a tale of redemption and friendship, told from Igor’s perspective.

Max Landis, the writer behind Chronicle, is responsible for the script, and the way that he’s talked about the project in interviews shows how much he cares about the project, and most importantly, how much he wants audiences to be moved by it. And that in itself is encouragement enough.

McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin) returns behind the camera for his first feature since 2009’s Push, having spent recent years helming various episodes for the small screen, including the ever-popular Sherlock.

Frankenstein is due to be released on January 16th, 2015. For now, here’s the first look at Radcliffe on the set:
