Matthias Schoenaerts (The Danish Girl, The Mustang) has almost come to terms with audiences hating his character in his latest film, Supergirl. In his first ever superhero movie, the Belgian actor plays Krem, a ruthless space pirate who shoots Kara’s (Millie Alcock) beloved dog, Krypto. It kicks off the action in the exciting intergalactic western, but Schoenaerts is convinced that anybody seeing the film won’t love to hate him. “They’re just going to hate me!” he says. “And I’m a dog lover! I killed a dog in another film – The Drop – as well.”
In Supergirl, 2026’s first superhero film, Kara Zor-El is wandering the galaxy when she comes across Krem and his band of thugs. When Krypto is seriously wounded, she sets out to take revenge and steal the antidote for his wounds. And, at the same time, she joins forces with Ruthye (Eve Ridley), whose family has been wiped out by the pirates and is looking to destroy them. It’s a journey full of danger and surprising characters.
In the exclusive interview below, Schoenaerts talks about his distinctive make up in the film, as well as how playing a villain brought out the child in him. He also describes how he created much of the alien language spoken by his character – in real life he speaks three European languages fluently – and he recalls the cherry pie he had to eat repeatedly during his first day on set. “It was so sweet I thought that by the end of the day my teeth would fall out!”
