Casting on season three of True Detective has ramped up a gear with Selma’s Carmen Ejogo set to star opposite Mahershala Ali in the Nic Pizzolatto drama.

Season three will tell the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Ejogo will play the female lead, Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980. Ali (Moonlight) stars as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.

Since Ejogo starred in Ava DuVernay’s Selma as Coretta Scott King her career as soared landing her roles in films such as It Comes at Night, Alien: Covenant and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald. She will next be seen on the big screen opposite Denzel Washington in Roman J. Israel Esq, she is currently starring in the Starz show The Girlfriend Experience.

Season 1 of True Detective had a rapturous response from audiences, mostly due to the thrilling story and the casting of the brilliant Matthew McConaughey as Rustin Cohle and Woody Harrelson as Martin Hart as Louisana State Police homicide detectives investigating the murder of prostitute Dora Lange who had their own personal issues layered into a story which spanned over 17 years and covered themes such as philosophical pessimism, masculinity, and Christianity.

Season 2 come with a new cast which included Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly, and Vince Vaughn and took place in California and follows the interweaving stories of officers from three cooperating police departments.

Show creator Pizzolatto, will serve as showrunner and direct alongside relative newcomer Jeremy Saulnier. Executive producers include Pizzolatto, Saulnier and Scott Stephens.
