Ahead of this year’s Comic Con, it was revealed by Deadline that Ben Affleck had been set by Warner Bros. to co-write Batman’s planned solo movie (which he’s also attached to direct). As a result, fans were left eagerly anticipating an announcement during the DC Comics panel, but when nothing came, everyone was back to wondering if the movie is really happening.

Whether or not he’s actually been penning that screenplay with comic scribe Geoff Johns is hard to say, especially based on recent comments from the actor/director in Total Film!

“If I could make it work, yeah, obviously that would be like a dream,” Affleck said when asked if he has any intention of taking the helm of Batman’s next solo outing (which has no release date). “The trick is, as to any movie, is to make sure that you – if you’re going to direct it – that you can make it good. You’ve got to have the right idea and the right take on it. Broadly speaking, it’s something I’d be open to, for sure. It’s a very exciting idea.”

It definitely sounds like he’s open to the idea of it then, but further remarks from Batman v Superman producer Charles Roven shed some light on the chances of this really happening.

“He’s about to start a movie now (Live By Night], and he’s also got obligations to be in the Justice League movies. The calendar is a little bit tricky. Of course, the script obviously has to be worth of him wanting to direct it. And once that happens, it’s still got to fit into the calendar. We’re hoping we can make it happen. We’re just at the beginning of the question.”

Basically, everyone wants Ben Affleck to direct Batman and he’s interested in doing so (helming a Batman movie which will likely gross over $1 billion certainly won’t be a bad thing for his directing career). It just comes down to getting the script right – which shouldn’t be an issue if Affleck and Johns really are working together on it – and finding the time, so here’s hoping we get some concrete information on the status of Batman’s movie next year…
