Will-Smith-and-Jaden-Smith-in-After-EarthHitting US theatres at the end of the month, After Earth marks M. Night Shyamalan’s return to the multiplex for the first time since The Last Airbender back in 2010.

The summer blockbuster sees real-life father-and-son Will Smith and Jaden Smith taking the leads, and with just a few weeks to go before the movie hits theatres, the first clip has debuted over on Clevver.

After Earth is set 1000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

The two Smiths look set to be front and centre throughout much of the movie as on-screen father-and-son duo, Cypher and Kitai Raige. And they’re joined by Isabelle Fuhrman, Zoë Kravitz, and Sophie Okonedo.

Shyamalan is directing from a script he co-wrote with Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli), with Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) hired for a polish.

Despite failing to impress critics, Shyamalan’s adaptation of The Last Airbender was a solid success at the box office. And with the two Smiths leading the charge, I have a feeling that After Earth will be another big hit, no matter how it’s received by critics. What we’ve seen so far from the film has definitely been promising, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the world Shyamalan has helped to create.

After Earth will be released in the US on May 31st, with its UK release date following shortly after on 7th June.
