Ruby SparksComing from the directors of Little Miss Sunshine, Ruby Sparks is promising to be one of those rare charming indie comedies we see every few years.

The young rising star, Zoe Kazan (Happythankyoumoreplease) stars as the eponymous co-lead, and has penned the script herself, and she’ll be joined by an excellent cast headed up by Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), Annette Bening (American Beauty),  Steve Coogan (a.k.a. Alan Partridge), and Antonio Banderas (The Skin I Live In).

“Calvin (Paul Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing – as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Zoe Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person.”

Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, co-directors of Little Miss Sunshine, are back behind the camera for their first feature since their Oscar-winning debut.

Ruby Sparks, previously titled He Loves Me, will be given a limited release in the US on 25th July through Fox Searchlight – who have distributed some of the finest independent films in recent years – followed by later this year in the UK on 12th October. This definitely sounds like one to look out for, and in case you missed it a few months back, I’ve added the first trailer below. As usual with these new images, you can click to enlarge.
