3. Superman: Birthright

Superman: Birthright is considered among many fans to be the definitive origin story for the Man of Steel. Clark Kent’s early years as Superman is a story which has been told time and time again, so what makes this one the best? Well, writer Mark Waid and artist Leinil Francis Yu avoid a “been there, done that” approach, instead finding a refreshing yet familiar take on one of the most widely known superhero origin stories. There are so many powerful moments and such iconic imagery contained within the book, that it truly is a shame that the rumours that Zack Snyder was basing Man of Steel on this arc would ultimately prove to be false. Regardless, this is an absolute modern classic and an essential – yet easy to follow – Superman story.
