Truman Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) – Capote
Authors, like any creative minds, often lead fascinating and potentially destructive paths, and fewer screen depictions of such have been as captivating as Capote.
Much of the film’s brilliance comes from the staggering central performance as the eponymous scribe by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman who adopts the trademark squeaky voice to perfection. Documenting the period in which Truman Capote penned his seminal crime memoir In Cold Blood, the film beautifully and boldly uncovers the many pieces in the famed American’s façade which builds to a characterisation of unquestionable authenticity.
Toby Jones also tackled the man to fine effect in the less-seen Infamous, but they’ll only ever be one screen Capote, and that honour – and indeed Oscar – lies with one of the true geniuses who fell far too soon.
