Despite taking to his Twitter account to dismiss reports that he will reprise the role of Captain Kirk in Star Trek 3 as “just rhetoric to cause hype”, William Shatner has now confirmed that he has been approached for a role in the movie. Roberto Orci is directing for a 2016 release, the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

The actor made an appearance at the Wizard World Nashville Comic-Con recently and reveal to fans that J.J. Abrams – who is too busy with Star Wars Episode VII to direct, but will still produce Star Trek 3 – has been in touch to discuss a cameo which it is believed will reunite him with Leonard Nimoy’s Spock.

When one fan asked if he’s interested in appearing in the movie, Shatner replied: “Oh, yeah. If it is meaningful,” before adding, “So I get back from Australia, and it is all over the internet that the director held an interview and said they wanted Shatner and Nimoy to be in the next movie. I bet JJ is frothing at the mouth.” The actor then revealed that he’s been sworn to secrecy, before joking: “How do you get me fifty years later into the movie? I know it’s science fiction, but even I couldn’t come up with an idea.”

William Shatner will be among a number of Star Trek actors making an appearance at Destination Star Trek 3 in London this weekend, so hopefully he’ll talk more about this cameo now that his comments from Nashville have started spreading. Also there is current Star Trek 3 and DREDD star Karl Urban.
