Today, MTV had an exclusive talk with Wally Pfister, the director of photography for Batman 3, about the possibility of Batman being entirely shot in IMAX.  While the prospect of shooting the entire film in IMAX has been in the rumor mill for some time, it seems as if we are moving away from rumor and closer to the truth.

As you can recall, Christopher Nolan had shot a portion of The Dark Knight in IMAX and it worked out really well.  Unfortunately, Pfister won’t be able to conclude anything about the possibilities of shooting in IMAX until he reads the script, but he does say that “it would certainly be my preferred, amazing goal to shoot the whole movie in IMAX,”

Pfister goes on to say that:

“I must say I’m a huge IMAX fan. I like IMAX more than I like 3-D,” he explained. “Chris’ films are so densely layered and have so much going on visually in every way that IMAX helps enhance that because of the scope and the scale of it — it becomes a much larger canvas to paint on. That’s what we found on ‘Dark Knight.

The only way that the whole movie can be filled in IMAX is if there isn’t a lot of running around, which is the reason why Inception wasn’t shot in IMAX.  You can’t simply run around with an IMAX camera, “it’s just not physically possible.”  So when you think about scenes like the bat bike chase that r under the bridges, something like that wouldn’t be possible from my understanding of the filming process.

While shooting in IMAX would make Nolan’s third Batman film visually astonishing, the question becomes would it limit the amount of action that can take place or would it just prevent specific types of action scenes from occurring?  Think car chases and scenes where the camera needs to move a lot in order to make the scene feel real, like the skiing scene in Inception for example.

If the script allows for Batman to be shot entirely in IMAX expect some mind-blowing cinematography because after Inception you know Nolan’s going to have to find a way to show himself up.  What do you guys think about Batman three being in IMAX?  Do you think Nolan can compete with himself after making a film like Inception?  Leave your answers in the comments section please.
