Exciting news continues to trickle through regarding Batman 3 (or 7, it depends how you’re counting). After Michael Caine suggested that shooting would start in the spring, First Showing are reporting a “reliable inside source with a casting grid” that the Riddler is in line for villain duties, with Gordon-Levitt the preferred choice to play the role. Gordon-Levitt is apparently listed as simply “interested”.

First Showing seem inclined to treat the grid as stronger confirmation of the presence of The Riddler as a character than of Gordon-Levitt as the actor to play him, but having seen Gordon-Levitt’s charismatic performance in Inception and his unabashed praise for Christopher Nolan as a director, it would not be a surprise to see him confirmed in the role shortly.

Although Gordon-Levitt may seem a little fresh-faced for a heavyweight villain role, he is already the same age as Heath Ledger was when The Dark Knight was released and that didn’t work out so badly. Bear in mind also the ease with which he handled the action and fighting sequences in Inception and Nolan’s increasing preference for using the same actors (Bale, Caine, Cillian Murphy) across several films. File this one under hopeful expectation.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
