After experiencing perhaps the most shocking ending to a Marvel movie ever, it probably took a while before you were able to get up out of your seat. That’s not a bad thing, however, as it probably means you didn’t make the mistake of leaving before seeing Avengers: Infinity War’s after-credits scene! What did it all mean, though? Well, we have you covered!

BUT WAIT – SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS INFINITY WAR LURK BELOW. CONSIDER THIS A WARNING IN BOLD TEXT.

Nick Fury Maria HillPost Credits Scene Explained

The scene starts with former S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury and Maria Hill discussing the massive energy surge above Wakanda moments before they bear witness to people vanishing due to Thanos clicking his fingers and wiping out half of all known life in the universe. As Hill turns to dust, Nick realises he has to act fast and so we then see him retrieve a pager (remember those?) which has clearly been suped up with some cosmic enhancements. As he too perishes, the camera focuses on the device’s screen as the distress signal he sent is acknowledged by the appearance of a logo sure to be familiar to comic book fans.

Yes, that’s Captain Marvel he just contacted, a character who will make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in a solo movie next March before blasting into Avengers 4 a couple of months later.

Brie Larson Captain MarvelHowever, who is Captain Marvel and why should you care?

In the comics, Carol Danvers was an officer in the United States Air Force who gained superhuman powers when an explosion resulted in her DNA being fused with a Kree warrior called Mar-Vell. He’s being played by Jude Law in the movie, while Captain Marvel will be brought to life by the immensely talented Brie Larson. Marvel has confirmed that her movie takes place during the 1990s and that she’ll find herself caught in the middle of the Kree/Skrull War, a battle between two alien races which could lead to the destruction of the entire universe. In the comics, it took the entire might of The Avengers to stop that but Carol will be going it alone in her movie with no backup.

Mar-VellHowever, as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that Captain Marvel is even more powerful than Thor, it’s fair to say she’s not going to need much in the way of help! She can fly, is massively strong, and is capable of firing energy blasts as powerful as a nuclear bomb. She’s also a skilled pilot (obviously) and a master of hand to hand combat.

Which MCU characters will be in the Captain Marvel movie?

We’re also going to see younger versions of Nick Fury, Agent Coulson, and Guardians of the Galaxy villain Ronan the Accuser in Captain Marvel and Fury crossing paths with Carol explains how he knows who she is at the end of Avengers: Infinity War and her movie will no doubt address how he gets his hands on that pager. What isn’t clear is why Captain Marvel has never returned to Earth and how she hasn’t aged but she will be there in Avengers 4 to help turn the tide against the Mad Titan.

ronanWhy hasn’t she come back before now to help out against the likes of Loki and Ultron? That’s another question likely to be answered by Captain Marvel’s movie so it’s fair to say next March can’t get here soon enough…
