Vanessa Kirby has joined Hugh Jackson and Laura Dern on the cast of ‘The Son’ the follow-up movie from ‘The Father’ filmmaker Florian Zeller.

The next from Zeller will focus on adolescent depression. The story follows Peter (Jackman) as his busy life with his new partner Emma (Kirby) and their baby is thrown into disarray when his ex-wife, Kate (Dern), turns up with their troubled and angry teenage son, Nicholas.

Peter strives to be a better father, searching to help his son with intimate and instinctive moments of family happiness — to solve, with understanding, what Nicholas is going through. But the weight of Nicholas’ condition sets the family on a dangerous course, and they must do everything they can to maintain the bonds that hold them together.

The project will be adapted by Zeller and Christopher Hampton from one of Zeller’s own stage plays, part of a trilogy of family-centric dramas that also includes ‘The Mother.’

Zeller originally, just like ‘The Father’, delivered the story onstage in Paris in 2018 before it hit London’s West End in 2019 to rave reviews.

Zeller is coming off two BAFTA wins for the poignant and heartbreaking story of ‘The Father’ which stars both Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman.

Kirby was last seen in ‘Pieces of a Woman’, her upcoming projects include ‘Suddenly’ from writer-director Thomas Bidegain, in which she will star with Jake Gyllenhaal.
