It was revealed last week that Glee and Whiplash actress Melissa Benoist will play Supergirl in the upcoming TV series which is set to debut this Autumn. The next major casting addition has now been made, and it’s Desperate Housewives and True Blood star Mehcad Brooks as Superman’s best friend, Jimmy Olsen.

Of course, we have no idea how much of a role Superman will have in the series or even if he will exist in this world, so some alterations have been made to this character during his journey to the small screen.

Supergirl’s Jimmy Olsen is described as  a smart, worldly photographer for CatCo, the media company where Kara/Supergirl works. He has recently been living and working in National City, though the reason is still a secret, and his salt-of-the-earth nature quickly piques Kara’s interest. So, no Daily Planet or Metropolis!

One obvious major change is the fact that this Jimmy won’t be Caucasian, something he’s been in all previous television, movie, and comic book appearances. It’s no big deal – a similar race change was made to Man of Steel’s Perry White and The Flash’s Iris West – but some fanboys will undoubtedly be upset.

The Supergirl pilot was penned by Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow), and they will executive produce the series alongside Sarah Schechter (of Berlanti Productions) and Warner Bros. TV.
