Marvel may be dominating the big screen, but DC Comics are currently busy making their presence felt on the small one before their movie slate kicks off in 2016 with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Arrow is now in its third season, The Flash broke ratings records when it debuted earlier this year, and both Gotham and Constantine have been very well received (based on the former’s performance, season two is pretty much guaranteed at this point). As we look ahead to next year, there are even more properties on the way from DC, with everything from Preacher to Teen Titans and of course Supergirl all on the way.
A few details have so far trickled out about Supergirl, including character descriptions and news on how the show plans on handling the iconic female superhero. Here, we take you through the ten things you most need to know about both the Supergirl from the comic books and what we should expect from the series.
10. A New Origin Story…Sort Of
In this series, Kara Zor-El arrives on Earth in her teens and is taken in by the Danvers, a family who teaches the young Supergirl to be careful with her powers. The similarities to Superman’s origin story are obvious apart from the age difference, and she apparently uses her powers for the first time in the wake of a public disaster (earning herself a “Super” new name in the process).
There have been a variety of origin stories for Supergirl over the years, and almost all of them have revealed that Kara was sent to Earth by her parents at the same time as Kal-El,, so expect plenty of references to Krypton. The Danvers name hasn’t been plucked from thin air either, as one version of Supergirl (“Linda Danvers”) was also adopted by the Danvers family.
