This Monday 9th November sees the home video release of the first season of the Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul. It tells the back story of Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman, Walt and Jesse’s shady lawyer from the critically acclaimed drama series.
Saul Goodman comes from a long line of lawyers with questionable integrity, both on TV, and movie screens. Some are criminals, some are just greedy and inept. All, however, are incredibly shady, and here are ten of cinema’s shadiest.
10. Fletcher Reede (Liar Liar)
In Tom Shadyac’s 1997 comedy Jim Carrey’s Reede is a successful trial lawyer, but not such a great family man. When he becomes unable to tell a lie, however, his life starts to turn upside down. His cases start to fall apart, and his personal life looks to be in tatters. it soon becomes apparent that Reede’s only real professional skill was the ability to be completely dishonest, using lies and half-truths to win cases rather than simple facts.
9. Mick Haller (The Lincoln Lawyer)
2011’s The Lincoln Lawyer, directed by Brad Furman, sees Matthew McConaughey as the titular Lincoln Lawyer, Mick Haller. Defence lawyer Haller has a client list that reads like a who’s who of lowlife scumbags. Represent these kinds of people is bad enough, but Haller doesn’t even have a plush office in an uptown zip code. When your lawyer works out of his car, you know it’s time to look for higher class representation.
8. Donald Gennaro (Jurassic Park)
Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster introduces us to Donald Gennaro, John Hammond’s lawyer, played by Martin Ferrero. Gennaro is sent to the park to investigate safety after an employee accident. Gennaro, however, is blinded by the earning power of the park’s concept. He’s more than willing to compromise the safety of the park’s guests, as long as it means getting the park open, and starting to enjoy the huge potential financial yield.
