Returning
The film reunites him with a slew of past collaborators, with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler leading the charge in the romantic-comedy with a spoof twist, a blend not often seen on the big screen at all.
Ahead of its debut at Sundance in a week and a half’s time, the first clip and poster have debuted over on BuzzFeed, giving a great first look at the kind of comedy we can expect.
They Came Together relates the epic love story of Joel, a corporate executive for Candy Systems and Research, a mega candy store chain, and Molly, the owner of a small sweet shop called Upper Sweet Side. When Joel is tasked with shutting down Molly’s mom-and-pop operation, the unlikely lovers find themselves hurtled into a whirlwind romance. From quaint bookstores and coffee shops to neurotic family members and psychotic ex-lovers, Joel and Molly must face some harrowing obstacles on their path to true love.
Rudd and Poehler are joined by a brilliant ensemble cast, led by Cobie Smulders, Christopher Meloni, Max Greenfield, Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Jason Mantzoukas, Melanie Lynskey, Michael Ian Black, Ken Marino, Michael Shannon, Michaela Watkins, and Ed Helms.
Wain reunites with Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer) to co-write the script, with the latter producing and Wain executive producing.
Speaking a little about the film ahead of its bow, Wain had this to say about his latest comedy:
After having already made world-changing cinematic statements on adolescence (Wet Hot American Summer), religion (The Ten), service (Role Models), and community (Wanderlust), I teamed up with Michael Showalter to take on a topic that (to our knowledge) has yet been seen in the movies: ROMANCE — particularly heterosexual romance between two white people.
Our next idea was to mix this romance story with humor – so you could almost call this a Romantic-Comedy, so to speak.
We first worked with Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd on Wet Hot American Summer. They played summer camp counselors in that movie, so it was obviously hard for us to imagine them playing a shopkeeper and a corporate executive, respectively. But thanks to a team of acting coaches and an award™ winning VFX team, we pulled off the illusion.
They Came Together will be making its debut at Sundance on January 24th, for all those heading to Park City. With any luck, the full film will be every bit as great as this first clip and poster, and its debut will be followed by a smooth road to distribution, quite possibly in the summer.
