To celebrate the long-awaited UK release of Darren Aronofsky’s stunning new drama, The Whale, we caught up with the film’s cast and writer to find out more.

From Darren Aronofsky comes The Whale, the story of a reclusive English teacher living with severe obesity who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter for one last chance at redemption. Starring Brendan Fraser and is based on the acclaimed play by Samuel D. Hunter.

Chatting to star Brendan Fraser, who has since been nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA, and writer Samuel D. Hunter we discuss the subject matter and the potency of the story, Fraser’s much-talked-about transformation, why Aronofsky was the perfect director to take the helm and what they hope the film can imbue in audiences when they watch it. Next, we chat to co-stars Sadie Sink and Hong Chau (the latter of whom has also earned an Academy Award nomination) about their love of the story, working with Fraser on his compelling “renaissance” role, and the challenges of working on a chamber-piece that almost felt like theatre and much more.
