Just a few days after James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the first 10 projects in the new DC Universe it has been slipped that James Mangold is in early talks to helm ‘Swamp Thing.’

According to Variety, Mangold is a longtime fan of the DC Comics supernatural hero and approached Gunn and Safran with his idea for the forthcoming project.

Gunn and Safran’s conviction to diversify the DCU will see ‘Swamp Thing’ investigate its dark origins.

By way of explaining further, Gunn referenced the initial reactions to the Guardians of the Galaxy joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and initial questions about how Rocket Raccoon would work standing next to Thor. “That mashup quality” wound up being one of the highlights of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” Gunn argued.

Gunn said they’re “one-upping” that approach with ‘Swamp Thing.’

“This is a much more horrific film, but we’ll still have Swamp Thing interact with the other characters,” he added.

Mangold is no stranger to comic book adaptations writing, directing and executive producing the R-rated superhero movie ‘Logan,’ the third ‘Wolverine’ film starring Hugh Jackman. Mangold’s upcoming projects include ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ and Searchlight’s Bob Dylan biopic ‘A Complete Unknown,’ starring Timothée Chalamet, up next.
