The-Host-Character-Poster-Saoirse-RonanEntering theatres today, Andrew Niccol’s The Host marks the return of Stephenie Meyer’s work to the big screen, following the conclusion of The Twilight Saga last year.

If it does well, there’s a potential for the adaptation to be a franchise-started for all involved, with Meyer having previously spoken of the possibility of turning the original novel into the first instalment of a trilogy.

We’ve seen plenty from the film so far to suggest that it’s another brilliant sci-fi blockbuster from Niccol. And with the film heading to the multiplex today, we’ve got what looks to be a final trailer to share, giving a little more of a focus on the romantic side to the story.

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the invading ‘soul’ who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves – Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she’s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Saoirse Ronan is front and centre as Melanie Stryder in The Host, with Jake Abel and Max Irons completing the young leading trio. And starring alongside them are Diane Kruger, William Hurt, and Chandler Canterbury.

Niccol is directing from his own script, adapting the original novel of the same name by Meyer.

The Host is released in cinemas today, 29th March, in the UK and US. If you’re heading to the cinema this weekend, and looking for the latest in the young adult genre, this looks to be a strong bet.
