Matthew-McConaugheyChristopher Nolan’s Interstellar has fast become one of the most anticipated films of next year, marking the writer-director’s return behind the camera for the first time following the conclusion of his and brother Jonathan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy.

Set to be a co-production between Paramount and Warner Bros., Interstellar was first scripted by Jonathan Nolan, and was officially set for a November 2014 IMAX release earlier in the month.

Until now, we’ve had no further news. But Deadline are reporting that Christopher Nolan is thought to have offered the male lead in the film to Matthew McConaughey.

The film will depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding.

The character for which McConaughey is thought to have been offered the part is called Cooper. There’s no deal in place with McConaughey yet, but I’m hoping his schedule will be free, because I’d love to see him come on board to lead Nolan’s next directorial outing.

After years spent largely known for the romantic comedies he’s starred in, McConaughey has had an uncommon change of direction in his career path in recent years, making a real name for himself once more in the likes of The Lincoln Lawyer, Killer Joe, and Magic Mike.

He’ll soon be soon in Jean-Marc Vallée’s Dallas Buyers Club and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, both of which should help to further cement the recent trajectory of his change in career path brilliantly.

Nolan is set to direct from his own script, based on the script penned by his brother, which he’ll be adapting to merge with an original idea of his own. Essentially, this is going to be awesome.

Interstellar is set to be released in regular and IMAX theatres on November 7th, 2014. With an autumn/fall release date set for next year, we should be hearing some firm casting news soon. Let us know what you think of McConaughey taking the lead for Nolan’s next outing in the comments below. Personally, I’m all for it.
