Irving Rosenfeld and Sydney Prosser are consummate con artists. They deal with art fraud and loan scams, gradually building up into a major business. Things come to a crashing halt, however, when the FBI take an interest in the pair, using leverage to force the con artists to help the bureau bring down white collar criminals.

The plan is as elaborate as it is ingenious. New Jersey Mayor Carmine Polito wants to rebuild Atlantic City, but he needs investment, and to procure the necessary permits. Rosenfeld, Prosser and FBI agent DiMaso draw Polito in with the aid of a fake millionaire sheik and some sizeable seed money. Congressmen and senators are bribed, wires are tapped, and charges are brought.

The real con, however, is how Rosenfeld and Prosser save the lives of themselves, and the freedoms of the people around them, by intercepting the funds and diverting suspicion. American Hustle paints Rosenfeld and Prosser as two of cinemas greatest con artists, having kept control of the plan despite insurmountable odds.
