The Witch was one of last year’s most exciting and original (and frightening!) horror movies, and now the writer and director behind it has revealed that his next film will be a remake of Nosferatu. During a recent appearance on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Robert Eggers confirmed that he’s moving forward with a new take on F.W. Murnaus 1922 classic.

However, it turns out that he didn’t intend to make it his next movie. “[It’s shocking] to me. It feels ugly and blasphemous and egomaniacal and disgusting for a filmmaker in my place to do Nosferatu next. I was really planning on waiting a while, but that’s how fate shook out.”

Eggers went on to reveal that he’s been a huge fan of the horror icon since childhood, so he’s clearly invested in making this new take on Nosferatu – which is arguably long overdue – something special. However, it doesn’t sound like we should expect to see a carbon copy!

“I can’t also do Max Schreck again either, so that’s fun, so it’s going back to the origins of the folk vampire.” It feels like it’s been a while since we got a really good vampire movie, and after what the filmmaker delivered with The Witch, this should be worth keeping an eye on!
