Red Director

Summit Entertainment are clearly confident that they have a hit on their hands with the upcoming Divergent, as they have now found a director for the follow-up to that movie, Insurgent. Last year, it was revealed that Divergent director Neil Burger would be unable to helm the sequel due to the fact that post-production of the first movie overlapped with pre-production of the second.

Instead, RED director Robert Schwentke will helm Insurgent (which has already been given a release date of March 20th, 2015), based on a script from Akiva Goldsman and a draft by Brian Duffield. Based on Veronica Roth’s sci-fi novels, the studio have even dated the planned third part of the franchise with Allegiant already dated for March 18th, 2016.

Divergent stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Ray Stevenson, Maggie Q, Zoë Kravitz, Jai Courtney and Kate Winslet, and will be released on March 21st.

Schwentke also directed big budget disappointment R.I.P.D., and is currently attached to The Finest Hours. Is it a good idea to rush out these three movies? It’s likely that the third instalment will also need another director, so this is a risky strategy for Summit, especially if Divergent doesn’t perform as well as they’re hoping.
