To celebrate the release of Reagan, which opens in US cinemas this weekend, we had the pleasure of chatting with some of its legendary cast to learn more about the biopic of the 40th President of the United States.
From dusty small-town roots to the glitter of Hollywood, and then on to commanding the world stage, REAGAN is a cinematic journey of overcoming the odds. Told through the voice of Viktor Petrovich, a former KGB agent whose life becomes inextricably linked with Ronald Reagan’s when Reagan first catches the Soviets’ attention as an actor in Hollywood, this film offers a perspective as unique as it is captivating. Dennis Quaid brings to life a story that transcends the boundaries of a traditional biopic, offering a profound exploration of the enduring impact of the power of one man who overcame the odds, sustained by the love of a woman who supported him in his journey.
Chatting to Dennis Quaid (Reagan) and Penelope Ann Miller (Nancy Davis/Reagan), we talk about the importance of the film and its history, why Reagan was a legendary figure in politics and in films, why the love story at the heart of the film is what makes the film work, Reagan’s rise to power, communism and why, because of COVID and strike delays, releasing the film in an election year gives it more power and purpose. We also have a quick chat about the continued legacy – and success – of two of their most popular films, InnerSpace and Kindergarten Cop.
We also chat with Jon Voight about the film in which he plays Viktor Petrovich, a character who acts as an amalgamation of several different people who crossed paths with the President during his time in office and before his campaigns. We discuss the character, the challenges of playing a President, and why the story resonated with him.
