Manhood

Manhood

No, it’s not what you think. I’m obviously talking about the sequel to Richard Linklater’s stunning drama Boyhood, released earlier this year. The main reason a sequel for this picture seems like a necessity, is because the thought of never catching up with Ellar Coltrane’s Mason is a depressing one.

We’ve become so enamoured and so immersed in his life, tracking him from the age of five onwards, it seems too premature to stop now. He’s only just started university – but we want to see him graduate, get a job, get married, have kids. His life has barely begun and we want to be a part of what’s still to come. Not to mention the fact that other characters, such as his sister, or parents, played by Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, have equally as fascinating character developments, and just knowing what they’re doing with their lives feels essential.

Thankfully, this artistically creative auteur has a habit of revisiting old material – with the exceptional ‘Before’ trilogy springing to mind – so fingers crossed he feels compelled to continue on with this project, even if we do have to wait another 12 years to see what he’s achieved.
