But, while we could sound the Kermode and launch into a pre-empted tirade about how 3D is ruining cinema, that the vision of a bona fide auteur is being compromised by a studio hungry for greater profits (it’s the first feature to be fully financed by Legendary Pictures, can you really blame them for wanting a safety net?), we’re not going to. Sorry. We enjoyed Dredd 3D too damn much.
After all, the conversion process will not delay the film’s July 12, 2013 release and will leave 2D prints of Pacific Rim untarnished. Should you, however, want to suffer the miniaturization and surrender the additional costs, the option will be open to you. We’ll probably see you there.
Pacific Rim will still star Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Charlie Day, and will focus on the efforts of specially trained pilots to keep marauding sea creatures at bay with a fleet of colossal robots.
THR had this one first.
