Well, it’s about time! It appeared at one point as if Joaquin Phoenix would play Doctor Strange for Marvel, but after turning down what looked set to be a multi-picture commitment, the hunt for an actor resumed.

A number of names came up, including Benedict Cumberbatch. He’s been a fan-favourite choice for the role for quite some time now, but like most casting ideas from fans, it appeared as if it more than likely would never happen. After emerging as a frontrunner, the actor refused to comment, and we’ve heard nothing solid.

Until now that is! Marvel have confirmed that the Sherlock star will play the Sorcerer Supreme on the big screen in a press release on their site just moments ago. It’s set to be released on November 4th, 2016.

Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) with Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions. There’s been talk of him getting a movie for years now.

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige in a statement released today. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.” Do you think he’s the right choice?
