To celebrate the release of Nosferatu, the hugely anticipated remake of the classic story, we had the pleasure of chatting with the cast and filmmaker behind this beautiful and haunting new film.
In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgard), a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter’s new bride, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Anna Harding (Emma Corrin). Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that’s far beyond her control.
Chatting to Hoult and Depp, we talk all things gothic, the lure of the story and the continued impact of the Nosferatu history, working with Eggers on his dream project, stepping into the world of the 1830s and how transformative the sets and designs were, their favourite scenes and what classic monsters terrified them when they were younger. Next, we chat to Skarsgard about his latest transformation in the lead role and why he loves to disappear into characters, his entry points into Nosferatu and how he and Eggers settled on his look, feel, and voice, and why the character has such a hold on audiences. Eggers, meanwhile, talks about his dream project coming to fruition, shooting on location and with “real” sets, casting, the technical side of the production, and much more in between.
