In every comic book adaptation war there are casualties, those that fall by the wayside, cast asunder by the movie going public. Who might it be this year? X-Men: First Class? Thor? Captain America? My money is on Green Lantern. Although Ryan Reynolds has “charisma to burn” (or whatever the phrase of choice might be these days), he will struggle to overcome the shortcomings of the material if it is not up to scratch. Just ask Hugh Jackman about the Wolverine spin-off.

Although it is of course far to early to say, although the trailer looks like having some eye-catching moments, although director Martin Campbell has an lot of successful work in his back-catalogue (The Mask of Zorro, Goldeneye, Casino Royale), I am genuinely concerned that it all looks a bit, well, silly.

This latest still of Abin Sur, only serves to compound by anxieties. It looks like a fairly shambolic photo-shop job, rather than some well-crafted make-up and I can only hope it is a joke or hastily composed effort that will be considerably better rendered for the final film. Apparently this is Temuera Morrison (sensational in Once Were Warriors, cropped up in the risible Martin Campbell-directed Vertical Limit, fathered an icon as Jango Fett), though you wouldn’t know just from looking.

For heaven’s sake. He’s bright purple! I’d love to be proved wrong and if you disagree and think this all looks awesome, please comment below and let’s get some lively and healthy debate going!

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
