Last night, we were treated to a brilliant set of eight character banners for Ruben Fleischer’s anticipated Gangster Squad, and following fresh on its hells comes another great banner with the excellent leading cast front and centre.

The brilliant first official trailer landed last month, and with a leading cast headed up by Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Sean Penn, and Josh Brolin, this is pretty much guaranteed to be one of the best films of next year.

“Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.”

Gosling, Stone, Penn, and Brolin star alongside a great cast, headed up by Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, and Robert Patrick.

Fleischer (Zombieland) is directing from a script by Will Beall (Castle, the upcoming Justice League), based on Paul Lieberman’s original seven-part article in the LA Times.

The film was originally to be released back in September, and was an early contender for the coming awards season, but in the wake of the tragic shooting at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises over the summer, Warner Bros. decided to push the film back to the New Year and reshoot a key scene in the film. It remains a huge shame for what could have been a big contender in the coming months, and I’m hoping that we might see the film in its original cut when it’s released on DVD/Blu-ray next year.

Gangster Squad is now set for a release in the UK and US on 11th January, 2013, which is a date that really can’t come fast enough. A brilliant way to start the New Year at the box office. For now, here’s the great new banner, which you can click through to enlarge.
