We almost saw the work of director Mark Romanek last year as he was involved in the Benicio Del Toro/Anthony Hopkins version of The Wolf Man before ‘making way’ for Joe Johnston and for my money I’d rather have seen what Romanek had in store for us.

Leaving The Wolf Man enabled Romanek to get involved with Alex Garland’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2005 novel Never Let Me Go, about a group of young adults in a secluded private school who begin to find out about their place in the wider world, and why they’ve been kept from it for so long.

Set in an alternate present Ishiguro’s novel is a masterful exploration of innocence and curiosity with a wave of emotional and moral turmoil saved for its final chapters so the chance to see it on the big screen is tantilising.

That, and the impressive cast Romanek and Fox Searchlight have on board. Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan will grab the headlines, but it is Andrew Garfield and Sally Hawkins I’m really looking forward to seeing. And now I can.

The first trailer for Never Let Me Go has just been released on Apple’s site for your viewing pleasure. US audiences will get this on the 1st of October, while I don’t know when the rest of the world get to enjoy this one.
