The big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is one of those things which has been talked about for years but never seems to be any closer to actually becoming a reality.

Well, with a release date set for January 13th, 2017, the movie may be about to make its first major casting addition. According to Variety, Sony wants Matthew McConaughey to play Walter Padick – better known to fans of the novel as the Man in Black – in The Dark Tower.

In a bizarre twist of fate, this isn’t the first time the actor has been offered the chance to play the character. The Man in Black also appears in The Stand and goes by the name of Randall Flagg there. When that novel was being adapted by Warner Bros., the True Detective and Dallas Buyers Club star came close to joining the project, but ultimately decided not to.

Apparently, McConaughey has also been offered the heroic Roland role in The Dark Tower, but he’s more drawn to playing the villain in what is expected to be the first in series.

Nikolaj Arcel is directing, while Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner adapted The Gunslinger. It remains to be seen whether the picky McConaughey takes on this role in The Dark Tower, especially after he recently passed on starring in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 for Marvel.
