The Karate Kid is doing sterling work over the pond bringing in a whopping m / £38m (estimate) in it’s opening weekend The movie only cost m to make so Columbia Pictures must be pretty happy with that.

Here in the UK, we cant get to see the movie for another 6 weeks (it’s released 28th July), I think mainly due to the World Cup. Actually, we’re off to a screening of it tomorrow and we’ll obviously be bringing you a report back.

With the movie doing well, it’s probably not surprising that there’s already talk of a sequel with Mike Fleming from Deadline bringing us the news that:

Agency sources tell me that Sony’s Columbia Pictures execs are meeting with writers to pitch their ideas on where to take the second installment.

The original The Karate Kid movie which starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita had two spin-offs so I guess it may have been inevitable that if this movie did well, another one our be on the way.

Obviously we’ll keep you post on further developments.
